BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT THE HOPE HEART INSTITUTE:

The Hope Heart Institute was founded almost 50 years ago by Dr. Lester Sauvage, a Seattle cardio-thoracic surgeon who pioneered the heart bypass.  The Hope still does basic (“bench”) research and has started clinical research as well.  Today, The Hope's research remains at the forefront of the cardiovascular field—and our health education publications reach nearly 5 million readers a year. The Hope also has elementary and middle school classroom-based programs.

PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM:

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the United States, driven by lifestyle, genes and other factors.  Heart disease related health care costs US citizens $258.5 billion per year (2006 Update, American Heart Association).  The Hope Heart Institute, a local non-profit organization, is interested in recruiting up to 10 high school science teachers to form a team to work with scientists and health professionals.  This team will develop a biology-based unit using science to motivate students to make heart healthy lifestyle choices. The new lessons will then be piloted in their classrooms. One of the goals is to provide context to learn concepts already covered in a high school biology class.  The lessons will be structured to prepare students to meet Washington State Science Standards. From what the team develops, the Hope will pursue funding to create a kit of materials in support of the lessons.  The funding will make the lessons and kits available to teachers for free, especially teachers serving vulnerable populations.

ELIGIBILITY:

High school teachers with three or more years classroom experience are ideal candidates for the institute.  Also important, having the creative ability to take cutting edge scientific information and work as a team to create engaging high school level lessons.
