Lester R. Sauvage, MD Research Fellowship

A unique aspect of the Department of Surgical Research is its contribution to The Hope's education mission through the Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program. Since 1967, 58 surgeons from 18 different countries around the world have come to The Hope for this two-year program.

During their first year, Fellows study advanced vascular surgical techniques. Their second year is spent using these techniques in a clinical setting. Many then return to their practices, teach and/or lead research projects.

The Hope is pleased to announce the 2007 recipient of the Sauvage Fellowship/Visiting Professorship: Dr. Baohong Cao MD, PhD.
Dr. Cao is an assistant professor in the University of Pittsburgh tissue engineering group and is known for his discovery of stem cells existing in skeletal muscle that can be grown and multiplied. Here, we will utilize his stem cell expertise in the BEAT grant project, which is using stem cells to repair myocardial infarcts (blockages of blood flow to the heart). We are extremely excited to have Dr. Cao on board. His discoveries, skills, and expertise fill several niches in the ongoing work of The Hope Heart Program at BRI.

Quotes from former Fellows:

"I was drawn to The Hope because of Dr. Sauvage's formidable international reputation and his pioneering work."

"I learned a great deal in my two years -- how to conduct research, write a paper and present papers at international meetings. I honed my surgical skills with real masters and would love to come back for more."

"The most memorable thing about The Hope was the close-knit working atmosphere where each and every person was highly experienced in his/her own field and could be approached readily."

—Vishwanath Bhattacharya, MD, England

"Dr. Sauvage is very famous in the area of vascular surgery, and I respect his passion for it."

"During my Fellowship, I was able to write and publish three research papers with the help of the people at The Hope. I was very happy about that."

—Yoko Onuki-Pearce, MD, Japan
