The Hope Heart Institute’s “Take Heart luncheon” culminated October 20 at Seattle Sheraton Hotel, raising next to $135,000 to improve health outcomes for underserved and at-risk members of our community. More than 350 passionate stakeholders attended, notable guests including Seattle sports fan favorites Lenny Wilkens, three time NBA Hall of Fame inductee; Seattle Sounder emeritus Roger Levesque and Seattle Seahawk Defensive Lineman Michael Bennett, who donated $10,000 via a surprise video.
“We are beyond thrilled that we were able to gather such a generous group together for such a good cause. The funds raised will help equip individuals with education, tools and resources needed to improve their cardiovascular health today and for future generations,” said Cherie Skager, Hope Heart Institute Executive Director. “We are proud to invest 100 percent of net proceeds into the programs in our own communities.”
Emceed by KING 5’s Jean Enersen, the luncheon featured inspiring stories and touching tributes. The keynote speaker was national expert Dr. Laura Hayman, Professor of Nursing at University of Massachusetts Boston, who spoke about the importance of primary prevention of obesity in children and families to reduce risk of chronic disease.
The Hope Heart’s Co-Founder Dr. Mark Dedomenico was honored with the “Change the Course Award,” for his innovation and commitment to cardiovascular health. Local resident Jackie Carr shared her personal story about surviving a stroke, encouraging all to heed critical warning signs and inspiring healthy lifestyle behaviors. The luncheon concluded with an interactive, hands-only CPR training.
All event proceeds will benefit the Hope Heart’s programs and services for tens of thousands of at-risk and medically underserved individuals. Programs include the Take Heart education series and innovative K-12 curriculum, and the Heart Restart community outreach program, which makes AED’s and CPR training more readily available.
